Black Hills Adventure: Hiking with WORF Through History and Wild Beauty – October 2022"

There’s something about being out in the wild, just you, the fresh air, and miles of rugged terrain ahead. It’s where I find my all. And this time, it was WORF and I taking on the Black Hills in October of 2022.

For those who haven’t experienced the Black Hills of South Dakota, let me paint a picture. Towering ponderosa pines stretching into the sky, jagged rock formations standing like ancient sentinels, and an endless maze of trails winding through some of the most breathtaking landscapes you’ll ever see. It’s a place that pulls you in, makes you forget about the noise of the world, and reminds you why Mother Nature remains undefeated.

WORF and I hit the trail early, the crisp morning air a welcome contrast to the usual routine. There’s something about that first step into the wilderness—like stepping into another world where the only thing that matters is the journey ahead. WORF, of course, was in his element. He’s got this way of moving through the landscape, head high, ears perked, like he’s always on a mission. Watching him navigate the trails, pausing to sniff the air or investigate a fallen branch, you’d think he was born for this.

The thing about hiking with WORF is that he keeps me in check. He doesn’t let me rush, doesn’t let me get lost in my head too much. He makes sure we take breaks, enjoy the view, and appreciate the quiet. And when we reached one of the higher overlooks, it was one of those moments that makes everything else fade away. Just WORF, me, and an endless view of rolling hills, rocky peaks, and the kind of solitude you can’t put a price on.

Of course, no hike would be complete without a little challenge. A steep incline, loose rock, and the kind of climb that makes you question your choices. But WORF? He just looked back at me, tongue out, tail wagging, as if to say, “You got this.” And he was right. We made it, and the reward was worth every step.

As we made our way back, I couldn’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for the open spaces, for the ability to still put one foot in front of the other, and for a companion like WORF who reminds me what’s really important. The Black Hills delivered, as always. And something tells me WORF and I will be back.

One of the best parts of the trip was getting to see some of the incredible national monuments in the area. We took time to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Wind Cave National Park. Each site had its own unique beauty and history, adding even more depth to our adventure.

Until the next adventure.
