The Road Between Moments

One Road. Eleven States. Countless Memories.

Bill & Debbie’s Great Northeast Adventure

There are trips you take because they’re on a calendar… and then there are journeys that become part of your story.

This was one of those journeys.

Over the course of nine days, Debbie and I crossed mountains, coastlines, waterfalls, national parks, bustling cities, tiny towns, and some of the most beautiful stretches of road we’ve ever traveled together. But looking back now, I realize the true magic of the trip wasn’t found in the destinations themselves.

It was found in the moments between them.

It was the early morning coffee before another long day on the road.

It was the quiet conversations somewhere in Pennsylvania while the miles rolled by beneath us.

It was laughing at GPS reroutes and spontaneous roadside stops.

The road carried us farther north into Maine and Acadia National Park — a place that somehow manages to slow your breathing the moment you arrive. The rocky coastline, the cool Atlantic air, the winding roads through the park, and the peaceful beauty of Cadillac Mountain all created moments that felt almost timeless.

Then came Vermont.

Honestly, Vermont may have surprised us more than anywhere else on the trip. The Green Mountains, small towns, scenic roads, maple stops, and our visit to the Ben & Jerry’s factory added personality and charm to the journey in the best possible way. There was something wonderfully simple and authentic about that part of the drive.

And then there was Niagara Falls.

No camera can fully capture the power of standing beside those falls at night while the mist rises into the illuminated sky. Staying on the Canadian side with a falls-view room turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. Walking together along the Niagara Parkway that evening is a memory I know we’ll carry for a very long time.

The boat ride the next morning? Absolutely unforgettable. Wet, windy, loud, touristy… and completely worth it.

One final surprise waited for us in Ohio at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. After so many miles and so many experiences, the waterfalls, quiet trails, and peaceful scenery there felt like the perfect closing chapter to the adventure. It gave us one final opportunity to slow down before pointing the 4Runner back toward Kansas City.

Speaking of the 4Runner… “2.0” officially became part of the story. Mountains, rain, highways, city traffic, scenic overlooks — it carried us through all of it without missing a beat. There’s something special about a great road-trip vehicle. Somewhere along the way it stops being transportation and becomes part of the memory itself.

As I look back through the footage and photographs from this trip, I’m reminded of something I’ve learned more deeply over the last few years:

The best journeys are not about checking boxes.

They’re about collecting moments.

This video is our attempt to capture a few of those moments — the scenery, the laughter, the roads, the waterfalls, the conversations, and the memories we created together along the way.

Thanks for traveling with us.

And as always…

The journey just keeps getting better.

The real question is…. what's next? Hmmmm
